What are some of the options?

Medical treatment is one of the most expensive necessities in life especially if you have to pay for it from your own pocket. Over the past year, we at International Medical Treatment Ltd (IMT), in the process of helping people find high-quality medical treatment overseas, have encountered patients who needed financial assistance to be able to get the quality treatment they required overseas.

We do not assist people financially, however, we can help people who need financial assistance with content that they can use to raise money for their medical treatment through different platforms.

Most people have the perception that overseas medical treatment is unaffordable, however, IMT works with hospitals that provide affordable, high quality medical treatment.

You also need to know that there are several ways through which you can fund for yours or your loved one’s medical treatment overseas. Below is a brief explanation of the various funding options you can consider:

  • Self-funding

What is self- funding?

This is basically catering for all your medical treatment charges from your own pocket.

  • Insurance

Does your insurance cover for your medical treatment overseas?

This is where a person pays a premium for an overseas medical treatment cover. If you are not sure of that, you can contact your insurer and find out whether they can cater for your medical treatment overseas and to what amount.

In Kenya for example, the NHIF (National Health Insurance Fund) is one way through which Kenyans can potentially pay for their medical treatment by paying a certain amount of premium each month.

  • Financing through financial institutions

How can you get financing from your financial institutions?

1. Banks

Getting loans from your bank can be an option. It is important however, to understand the terms and conditions of getting the loan, the interest that will charge and the repayment schedules.

2. SACCOS

You can also find out whether your Savings and Credit Cooperative Society can give you a loan for your medical treatment overseas. In addition, one can find out if the SACCO offers to pay for overseas medical treatment for their members as a policy.

  • Fundraising

Seeking financial support from other people like family and friends is another source to get finances for your medical treatment. It can be done in different ways:

1. Crowdfunding

This involves raising money from many people through the internet. Examples of such funding include creating a fundraising page and people contributing money online through the platform. This makes it very easy and quick to share with people and allows people to donate any amount simply by using their debit or credit cards, or mobile money.

In Kenya we recommend M-Changa: https://www.changa.co.ke/

In Nigeria we recommend Donate NG: https://donate-ng.com/

Global we recommend Go Fund Me: https://gofundme.com however please note that you may need the help of someone in a country that is supported, such as the US, UK, Australia etc to be able to accept donations through their bank account.

The above options do charge a fee for each donation received, so please ensure you read the terms and conditions properly before using their online platforms.

2. Community self-help events

You could call your friends and family for an event to raise money for your treatment. For example, Harambees in Kenya.

3. Church Contribution

You can request contribution from your fellow church members to pay for your treatment.

4. Ask contribution in Public areas

This could be at bus stops, train stations, in public service vehicles and in gatherings.

5. Electronic Money Transfer

One can request a telecommunication company or an electronic money transfer company to create an electronic pay bill number where anyone willing can contribute to the number.

For instance, in Kenya, people use M-Pesa Pay bill numbers to get contributions to pay for medical treatment and the added advantage is that, even strangers can contribute.

As stated earlier, IMT does not assist its clients financially but through creating content that they can put up on online platforms like Facebook and online fundraising sites like m-changa and donate-ng in Kenya and Nigeria, respectively.

Here is one of our clients who travelled to India for treatment of Hodgkin’s Lymphoma and who fundraised through various options to raise funds for his treatment.

Patient Testimonials

“IMT was influential in my journey to visit Apollo Ahmedabad, India for bone marrow transplant to help treat me for Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. They rendered assistance from getting me a treatment plan, visa acquisition to travelling, provided accommodation upon arrival in India, and kept tabs of my progress during the duration of the treatment. They offer a selfless service I must say.”

Abdulwaheed – Nigeria - Bone Marrow Transplant for Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, 2018
