Tests and Procedures

  • Dilation: A procedure done to stretch the lower oesophageal sphincter using a gastroscope to ensure the balloon used is in the right position.

  • Oesophageal manometry: This test is done to measure muscle coordination and strength of the oesophagus when a person swallows.

  • Endoscopy: This diagnostic procedure is done to view inside the GI tract by inserting an endoscope (a thin flexible tube fitted with a camera and light) inside the oesophagus and stomach through the throat.

  • Capsule endoscopy: This can be used in place of upper endoscopy by asking a patient to swallow a capsule which then transmits images of the oesophagus and stomach lining.

  • Barium swallow: Also known as Radiography, this diagnostic technique involves a patient swallowing a thick barium mixture which can then help in diagnosing conditions like Achalasia by checking for abnormalities in the oesophagus and stomach in an x-ray.

  • Colonoscopy: Using a colonoscope (a thin flexible tube fitted with a camera and light) a doctor can view the inside of the colon passing the tube through the anus and into the colon. To make the colon more visible in an x-ray, enema (liquids passed through the colon) can be used to dye the colon.

  • Laparoscopy: This minimally invasive procedure is used to help a surgeon gain access to the inside of the abdomen by making small incisions and inserting a laparoscope which is fitted with a camera and light to that make it possible to view the inside of the abdomen.
