Blood Type Facts

What you need to know about your blood type

Blood types are as a result of inherited genes from parents. Different blood types are determined by the presence or absence of certain antigens which can trigger the response of the body’s immune system when there are foreign bodies present in the body. The 4 major blood groups are A, B, AB and O.

Facts about blood types

The difference between these 4 blood groups is the presence or absence of antigens -A and -B on the surface of the red blood cells. The other factor in blood types is Rh factor which is a protein that can either be positive (+) or negative (-) creating 8 most common blood types.

RH- blood can be given to Rh- patients while Rh+ patients can receive both Rh+ and Rh- blood. Here are some few facts about each of these blood groups:

Blood Group A

  1. This group has the A antigen on the red blood cells and the B antibody in the plasma
  2. Blood types under this group include A+ and A-
  3. A person with this blood group can donate to A and AB blood groups
  4. A- can receive A- and O- blood
  5. A+ can get A+, A-, O+ and O- blood

Blood Group B

  1. It has only the B antigen in the RBC and A antibody in the plasma
  2. Includes B+ and B- blood types
  3. Can donate to B and AB groups
  4. B- can receive B- and O- blood
  5. B+ can receive B+, B-, O+ and O- blood

Blood Group AB

  1. This one on the other hand, has both A and B antigens on the red blood cells (RBC) but no A or B antibody in the plasma
  2. Blood types in this blood group are AB+ and AB-
  3. Can donate only to AB
  4. AB- can receive from AB-, B-, A- and O- blood
  5. AB+ can receive blood from AB+, AB-, B+, B-, A+, A-, O+, O- blood

Blood Group

Why you should know your blood type

These cancers may not cause signs in the early stages but as they progress, the followings signs and symptoms may occur:

  • Blood Transfusion: Knowing your blood type is critical especially in blood transfusion because if you are getting blood from a donor, it needs to be compatible with yours or else the red blood cells will clump together and block blood vessels causing death.
  • Pregnancy: Pregnant mothers have to go through a blood type test to determine which blood group their child should have because if the baby inherits Rh+ from the father while the mother is Rh-, that could cause complications if not treated.

Knowing your blood type can save your life so get tested and be on the safe side.
