Conditions Treated by Gleneagles Multi-organ Transplant Centre

Transplants basically involve replacing an unhealthy organ with a healthy organ from a donor. In some cases, such as that of bone marrow transplant, an individual can be treated using their own stem cells that are harvested from the body before treatment starts. A donor can either be a live or cadaveric donor; cadaveric meaning, one who is brain dead.

Treatments

  • Liver transplantation: The liver is one of the adaptable organs in the body and it can continue to perform its roles even in the presence of certain illnesses. However, when medical treatment is not enough, liver transplant can be the only option. In liver transplant, it does not necessarily have to the entire organ, a section of the liver can be taken from a donor and implanted into the recipient meaning that just like in kidney transplantation, the donor can be living or a cadaver donor.

  • Kidney transplantation: A person can survive on a single kidney, however, in cases where both kidneys are damaged, a kidney transplant is needed. The process involves replacing the damaged kidney or kidneys with a healthy kidney(s). In this transplant, the donor can either be living or dead (cadaveric donor).

  • Lung transplantation: It involves replacing a damaged lung with a healthy lung from a donor.

  • Bone marrow transplantation: Replacing damaged bone marrow also known as stem cells with healthy bone marrow from the donor. The stem cells can be harvested from the recipient (autologous transplant) before treatment or from a donor (allogenic transplant).

  • Heart transplantation: This is done to replace a damaged heart with a healthy heart from a donor. It is done for patients with end stage hearty disease that has failed to respond to other treatments.

Tests and Procedures

  • Liver biopsy: Taking a small sample of liver tissue and examining it under a microscope to check for abnormalities that can for instance confirm the presence of cancer cells and to determine the cause of liver failure.

  • Imaging tests: More advanced imaging tests like magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and positron emission tomography (PET) scan are performed to help in diagnostics.

  • Angiography: These tests enables a doctor to look at the heart chambers and measure the pressure inside the heart by inserting a catheter into the artery in the leg which is directed towards the heart with the help of x-ray.

  • Genetic testing: It involves determining whether a person is a carrier of the CFRT gene that causes cystic fibroids by checking a sample of blood or saliva.

  • Lung functioning test: This is done to check how well your lungs function; how much air you can inhale and exhale, and how fast you can breathe out.

  • Echocardiography: Using soundwaves to get images of the heart.

  • Bone marrow examination: It is also known as bone marrow biopsy which involves taking a sample of bone marrow and examining it in a lab to determine whether it is healthy and whether it is making normal amounts of blood cells. It can help to diagnose a condition, determine the stage of the condition and to monitor the treatment.
