What is Neurology?

This is a branch of medicine that focuses on conditions of the nervous system. It deals with both the central and peripheral nervous system including the brain and spinal cord.

Types of Conditions

Neurology conditions can include some of the following:

  •  Stroke – is damage to the brain that occurs when blood supply is cut off causing brain cells to die due to lack of oxygen. Abilities controlled by that part of the brain are then lost.
  • Seizure disorders like epilepsy – these occur when a person has sudden burst of intense electrical activity in the brain. The intense electrical activity causes a seizure such as an epileptic seizure.
  • Multiple Sclerosis – this is a disease that affects the insulating cover (myelin) around the nerve cells in the brain and spine. The disease damages the nerves and causes scar tissue to form.
  • Spinal cord disorders – such as inflammatory and autoimmune disorders.
  • Neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease – in this disorder, the brain cells degenerate and die causing a steady decline in memory and mental function.
  • Neuromuscular disorders such as Myasthenia gravis – this autoimmune disease occurs when the immune system attacks the body’s own tissue and causes muscle weakness, especially in the eyes and face.
  • Infections of the nervous system including Meningitis – this is an inflammation of the membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord which triggers symptoms like headaches, stiff neck and fever, and can, in some cases be fatal.
  • Headaches such as Cluster headaches and migraines.

Treatment

The type of treatment a patient needs depends on the type of neurological condition that is present and the stage the condition has reached. Below are some of the diagnostic and treatments options available for such conditions.

Common diagnostic and treatment options for neurological conditions

  • New Robotic Gait Training Technology speeds rehabilitation: This advanced technology is used to restore quality of life sooner for patients with neurological disorders. Such as Parkinson’s disease, brain injury and weakened leg muscles. This technology helps patients to walk better and restore their quality of life faster than they would using traditional rehabilitation therapy.

  • Botulinum Toxin Injections for the treatment of Neurological and movement Disorders: BONT is a protein and neurotoxin used to treat disabling pain, varieties of dystonia, abnormal movement and autonomic nervous system. These injections work by blocking unwanted transmission from being sent along the nervous system by preventing acetylcholine from being released.

  • Carotid Angioplasty: This procedure is done by inserting a balloon catheter into an artery in the groin or arm which is then moved into a narrowing in the brain’s artery after which a small balloon is inserted and inflated to enlarge the narrowing in the artery. This procedure in used in the treatment of stroke especially in people who are not physically capable of going through surgery

  • Cerebral Angiogram: This procedure is used in the diagnosis of conditions like blood clotting, and fatty plaque which cause vascular malformations such as cerebral aneurysm and stroke. It is done by giving images of the blood vessels in the head or brain.

  • Deep Brain Stimulation: It is a procedure that involves implanting a brain pacemaker to deliver electrical impulses to specific parts of the brain to treat conditions such as tremors, Dystonia and Parkinson’s disease.

  • Decompressive Craniectomy: It is a surgical procedure that involves the removal of part of the skull which is replaced once brain swelling has subsided either with the original bone or an artificial plate. This procedure is used to relieve brain swelling by allowing the brain enough space to expand without causing further damage. The procedure can also be used to treat traumatic brain injury or massive stroke.

The latest advancements in technology can play an important role in the treatment process.

IMT can help you access the latest technology. We can link you with our affiliated, internationally accredited hospitals and clinics where equipment such as the following is available:

  • Ultra-fast Siemens PET/CT Scanner
  • Long term video EEG monitoring and ICU EEG monitoring
  • Intra sinus thrombolysis in select cases of cerebral venous sinus thrombosis
  • 3Tesla MRI
  • Intra-arterial and intravenous thrombolytic therapy in acute ischemic stroke cases
  • Microsurgical clipping of aneurysms
  • Endovascular coiling/stenting for brain aneurysms
  • Lobectomy

Prevention

Prevention is always better than a cure. Some ways you can reduce your risk of getting neurological disorders include:

  • Avoiding smoking
  • Monitoring your blood pressure to keep it at a healthy level
  • Checking your weight through a balanced diet and exercise (ensure you get an exercise program)
  • Getting screened for carotid stenosis
  • Observing good posture
  • Managing diseases that can cause decreased nervous system functioning such as Diabetes and High Blood Pressure
  • Decreasing the use of over the counter medicine
  • Protecting yourself from head injuries
  • Drinking plenty of water
